Accessing County Records Online
Hello, Caleb with Dansie Design Build here. Today, I want to discuss how you can access county records online to determine your property’s square footage or acreage.
Why Knowing Your Property Size Can Be Helpful
Knowing the size of your property is helpful because if you live in a city like Herriman, Utah, that requires you to have over 6,000 square foot lot to build an accessory dwelling unit or an internal accessory dwelling unit, a basement apartment.
Salt Lake County Parcel Map
If you live in Salt Lake County, type into Google “Salt Lake County parcel map.” To access the parcel map, click HERE to see the map of all the properties and their information in Salt Lake County. Then, you’ll see a zoom button where you can scroll and select your city. For example, we’ll choose a lot in Herriman, Utah, and pull up the property information, showing the owners, total acres, and square footage you can verify is correct. The lot in our example is 0.33 acres. To convert that to square footage, you’re going to multiply 0.33 by 43,560 square feet. So this tool helps you quickly access and calculate your lot’s square footage.
Utah County Parcel Map
The exact process will apply if you’re in Utah County as well. You’ll search for the “Utah County parcel map”; it’s the first result. To access the parcel map for Utah County, click HERE. Their map system is a bit different but will work for all the cities in Utah County; Eagle Mountain, Fairfield, Cedar Fort, American Fork, Lehi, Lindon, Orem, Provo, Vineyard, and Pleasant Grove. So you’ll be able to zoom in on this map as well. For example, let’s choose a lot in Lehi, Utah, which is 0.383 acres.
Information Provided for Property Using a Parcel Map
To convert acres to square footage, multiply your total acres by 43,560. The information you find is publicly available for anyone to access. We’re not worried about showing someone’s personal information. Once you select a lot, it will show you the land value, owners, and acreage.
Conclusion
Suppose you’re researching your project to ensure your property to build an accessory dwelling unit or remodeling your basement for a basement apartment and meets all the city requirements. In that case, this tool HERE for Salt Lake County and HERE for Utah County helps you figure out your property square footage. It’s straightforward and fast.
