Designing a Basement Bathroom for Seniors in Draper, Utah

Senior-Friendly Basement Bathroom Layout

Hello everyone; I’m Caleb with Dansie Design Build. Today, I wanted to take you on a tour of the basement bathroom layout we have on this basement finish in Draper, Utah

I’m standing at the front of this hallway, and just toward the end of it is a bedroom, and off to the right side is a bathroom. So in this particular basement, we’re looking to design for the homeowner’s aging parents to be able to move in here and have an enjoyable and comfortable space.

So right now, we’ve got this set up to have one bedroom. This bathroom has excellent accessibility and comfortable space for older people.

Extra Wide Doors

So as we come into the bathroom, you’ll notice that there’s a door coming from the hallway. There’s another door directly to the bedroom so people can go straight into the bathroom or through the hall from the other side.

We used extra wide doors to make it comfortable to get mobility when entering and exiting the bathroom. This is not an ADA-approved bathroom because it is in a basement. Otherwise, we did put 36-inch wide doors here so that you can get through with walkers or any other medical equipment that people may need in the future.

Laundry Area

In this bathroom layout, we have a combination of a bathroom and a laundry room. We have the laundry and dryer hookups just off to this side. So we have the exhaust for the dryer, the hot and cold water, the drain piping for the washer, and the electrical wiring requirements for those appliances.

Shower Area

We have a standing shower in this bathroom. There’s no tub on this unit, so getting in and out of it will be effortless. It’s also easy to clean and avoid black mold because we did go with an acrylic tub surround, not a tile one in this one.

Toilet and Vanity Areas

Standing right where I am is where the toilet will sit. We also have the vanity and all the electrical switches needed to run the bathroom in this area.

Shelving Nook

The last thing over here is a little nook, which will have bathroom shelving and whatnot for a future date to store all your toiletries, towels, soaps, and everything else.

Wrapping Up

That’s the basement bathroom layout, and I’m happy about it because it works well for these homeowners. They love it, and it will be a functional space for their family when they move in here.
