Is Your Basement Walkout Drain Clogged?
Hello, everyone. I’m Caleb from Dansie Design Build in Herriman, Utah. Every year, we get hundreds of calls from people wanting to get their basement walkout drain fixed because they’re clogged or flooded.
A clogged basement drain can be a devastating experience that no one wants or needs to go through. You can avoid these floods if you’re patient and diligent enough to review some annual checklist items to ensure your basement walkout drain is ready for the storms.
#1: Inspect the Area
Item number one is to inspect the area. Check the stairs, landing, and landscaping around them to ensure they stay clear of the walkout drain. Also, check rain gutters to ensure downspouts have pipes to direct water away from the house.
#2: Check and Clean the Drain Gate
Number two is to check the drain grate and ensure it’s clean and ready for action. Remove any debris or dirt from the grate and provide ample space for water to flow through.
Once the cleaning is done, it’s time to test the drain’s capacity. Measure the amount of water you’re dumping to understand its capacity.
As we’ve been dumping buckets of water, we’ve put in 30 gallons, and you can see it’s filling up. This will help you determine if the drain can handle a storm.
#3: Keep the Drain Clean
For the final step, keep the drain clean. Go through this process regularly to ensure it’s in good shape and ready to serve you when needed.
